Welcome Kelly Balarie to the Thriving Beyond Belief podcast!

Now more than ever, we need rest –a deep, trust-centered knowing of God’s goodness and peace.

Yet, these days, we are experiencing the opposite: Three out of five people admit to doing more than they can manage. Many are more fearful than ever because of  Covid-19. Great amounts of people are under the weight of massive financial burdens. Not only this, but family life, virtual schooling, safety discussions and workplaces are overtaking over sacred home spaces.

Here, we are doing and worrying, more than being with and loving God.  The pressure — is real.

Whereas, we once figured rest was at home, now we realize that quietly tucking ourselves away from projects, people, and the pressures of today, isn’t the whole answer…  We are still left feeling worried, exhausted, tired, and weary. Distance, days at home and constant solitude don’t fill the hole or the desires of our heart.

What is rest? Real rest is soul rest. Soul rest not found from exterior things, but through heartfelt focus, soul-full simplicity and wise communication – all with the goal of fostering love. In this, we can grab hold of what matters most. We become present to God. We find peace. We lay hold of God’s goodness. This is rest.

Bestselling author Kelly Balarie believes a more soul-full way of life is available for us all. In her latest book Rest Now: 7 Ways to Say No, Set Boundaries, and Seize Joy, Kelly offers practical “hows” to help rest become a living reality.

In our interview, you’ll learn to:

  • create boundaries that allow you to overflow with love
  • say no so you don’t hate yourself later
  • ditch passive-aggressive behaviors in favor of healthy conversations that lead to peace
  • embrace permission-giving thoughts to create mental space for God

Rest Now shows us that we no longer have to strive for rest, but we can love from it, like Jesus did. This not only brings rest, but joy – even in the most tumultuous season.

Balarie says,

“Rest and joy are fully available to us even in this season thanks to Jesus.”

Some of Alison’s most valuable life lessons were discovered while stage acting as a hobby.

She then earned her M.A. in counseling from Denver Seminary and a Ph.D. in religion and psychology from the University of Denver. Alison’s doctoral dissertation centered on the relationship between religion and prejudice. She is certified in Internal Family Systems Therapy.

Alison maintains a counseling practice in the greater Boston area that specializes in the integration of faith and psychology. She and her husband, Joe, have two teenage children and enjoy spending time with extended family in New England and Wyoming where they ski, hike, and fly-fish as often as they can.

So can I really turn my emotions into allies?

  1. Do we all have overwhelming thoughts and feelings?
  2. How do I deal with negative emotions?
  3. How do I know an emotion has gotten extreme? How do emotions affect my actions and behaviors and the people I love?
  4. What does it mean to set boundaries with thoughts and feelings?
  5. In your book, you walk through 5 steps to turning your overwhelming thoughts and feelings into your greatest allies. Briefly, what are they?
  6. You mention turning anger into an ally. How can this be? What does that look like? Sound like?
  7. What about anxiety?  fear? envy? etc?
  8. How can I communicate with my loved one (spouse, child, friend) about what I’m feeling without blowing up the relationship?

088: Mary Demuth

1024 576 Thriving Beyond Belief

Welcome to today’s episode of Thriving Beyond Belief! I have a feeling that all of you reading this are going to absolutely love this episode. I am talking with Mary Demuth today. Mary and I have known each other for a while now and I am so thrilled that she now gets to share her incredible story with us.

Mary’s life is a testament of the Lord using broken things and creating something absolutely beautiful out of them. From a young age, Mary grew up in an environment of brokenness, chaos, instability, and darkness. From a place of distrust and abuse, Mary was exposed to the Gospel. She met Jesus and never turned back.

From this place of healing, the Lord gave her the gift of writing. Mary was able to write and work out her past in a way that would bless others through her gift. An author of 41 books, Mary shares what she is learning through both nonfiction and fiction.

We focus today on one of her books entitled The Seven Deadly Friendships. I love this topic because I feel like there are not many books on healthy relationships with friends, how to set boundaries, and how to handle a toxic friendship in a Godly way.

We take time to discuss each of these bad “friends”, all cleverly named in her book. She walks us through what each kind of toxic trait may look like in a friend, and finding the place of whether or not you need to step away from that relationship. Mary vulnerably discusses her past and talks about the fact that there are certain people she is naturally drawn to that are toxic, simply based on what she knew growing up.

Mary and I focus on recognizing those key negative traits that we are drawn to and how to avoid those moving forward. We even talk about the fact that each of us may be exhibiting one of these seven traits with others and how to recognize, repent, and change our actions with others from negative to positive.

This episode today is so important, life-giving, and practical for us not only for how we can be better friends and surround ourselves with healthy relationships, but also that the Lord doesn’t want us to stay in our circumstances.

No matter what your past is, what you have been through, he wants to lead you into a place of healing and a place of redemption. We are not meant to sit in our struggle forever. We are meant to strive to be all that the Lord created us to be.
