021: Lysa Terkeurst

618 340 Thriving Beyond Belief

My guest today on the podcast is Lysa Terkeurst. Lysa is one of the founders of Proverbs 31 Ministries and for the past twenty years has touched thousands of women with this ministry.

In our interview, we talk about how women walk in victory over things from their past, but still struggle with feelings that linger deep within their heart. Lysa encourages women to be on guard because Satan loves to pick up the old scripts that say, ‘you’re not worthy, not good enough, not capable.’ It’s at these times we need to stand firm in our faith, affirm our identity is in Christ, and be confident that God is good at being God. These words are so powerful!

I asked Lysa how she guides women to walk in assurance every day? She paints a beautiful picture using Psalm 51 to give us a fresh perspective. Not everyone can identify with being in a season of success or celebration, but everyone can identify, in some way, with being broken. In Psalm 51, David cries out to God about the brokenness in his life, asks God to cleanse him, and to create a new heart in him. For each of us, doing these steps allows God to begin to change and create a new heart in us.

Lysa defined thriving this way,“Thriving is not how I feel each morning, but rather what choices I make for the day. Some days I don’t feel very good about life, but I can choose how I think about the day.”

As a mom of five children, Lysa is a wealth of knowledge about being a mom, wife, successful woman, and finding your way through parenting.

Proverbs 31 Ministries encourages women to choose a word for the year. Lysa’s word this year is beautiful. She describes an inspiring story about a set of antique doors that now hang in her bathroom, and why these doors inspired her to feel beautiful and put something beautiful in her line of sight every day.

I am so thankful to have this opportunity to talk to Lysa.

On the podcast today my guest is Marian Jordan Ellis.  Marian lives in San Antonio, Texas with her family, but would describe herself as a Houstonian at heart.  She is a Bible teacher, author of several books for women, and the founder of Redeemed Girl Ministries.

In our interview, we talk about the times you know you are thriving and also the real struggle when you are not thriving.  Marian talks about finding God’s peace and favor when you are doing what you are uniquely called to do. But, she understands the emptiness you can feel when you look at someone else’s life, or question whether you should be doing what they are doing.   Marian shares that it has been, at times, difficult to thrive having a baby at 43 years old and has struggled to find “normal” again.

At the age of twenty five, Marian found her identity in searching for men, the corporate world, and things.  One night, as she looked into the bottom of an empty martini glass, she knew her life was just that, empty.  A friend invited her to attend a church service and it was there that she heard the beauty of the gospel for the first time.  She fell head over heals in love with Jesus.  God redeemed her and so many things from her past, she knew she had to share this with other women. As she began a more purposeful walk with the Lord, Marian was called to start Redeemed Girl Ministries for women.

Marian is now on tour for her new book Stand.  Her message is “we must rise up against darkness, temptation, persecution, and stop listening to the voice of rejection, and the lies of the enemy saying you are unloveable. Until the love of God is your chief identity and source, no other love is sufficient enough.  Who Jesus says you are should be at the deepest core of your identity.  It doesn’t matter how many followers you have on Instagram or what size you wear, the question should be, do you have the love of Jesus in your heart? Until this is settled within you, and you can say, I am who Jesus says I am, I am loved, beloved, free, and forgiven you will live unsettled.”

Marian Jordan Ellis is currently on her book tour across the country.  You can find her at Redeemed Girl or download the Redeemed Girl app.

003: Kat Harris

1024 683 Thriving Beyond Belief

Today on the TBB podcast, I am super excited to share my interview with Kat Harris.

Kat grew up here in Dallas and was one of six children.  Her childhood “looked normal” to everyone else, but the reality was her family was broken.  Her dad was an alcoholic, became homeless, and her parents divorced. Kat spent most of her teenage years and even into college searching for approval.

She didn’t realize how chaotic and stressful her world had become and how all these unhealthy storylines she had lived would affect her.  Her health suffered, she was mentally exhausted, developed an eating disorder and continued to date the wrong guys.

But, only by God’s grace, her dad became sober when she was a senior in college.  Relationships began to be restored, and Kat realized how “struggle and pain” want to be kept hidden, but when you bring truth to light, fear loses its power!

As we talked more about her story, Kat shared how she would define the word “thrive” and how she overcame a “survival mentality” that she had lived her whole life!

Today, Kat has created balance and rhythm in her daily life and has a “life board-of-directors” who have all access and keep her accountable.  She has learned that “real change happens when we show up”, start small and commit to the journey you are in.

Kat and I could have talked for hours, but we conclude the interview talking about The Refined Woman, an online magazine she and her friend Emily Scott started where they  share real stories that empower women to embrace their beauty, identity and value through the art of storytelling!

002: Kathie Lee Gifford

1024 683 Thriving Beyond Belief

Today on the TBB podcast I am super excited to have a very special guest and friend.

Kathie Lee Gifford and I first met in 2009, when she and Hoda had Jeff and I on their show, to talk about our book, I Do Again. Since then, we have had many opportunities to see each other in NYC, talk about our kids, and share the latest is in our lives!

She has had a successful four-decade career as a television host, actress, singer, playwright, and author, and is best known for her 15 years on “Regis and Kathie Lee.” As most of you know, she is the co-host of the fourth hour of the Today Show with Hoda Kotb.

One of the things I love the most about Kathie Lee is that she is unashamed about her walk with Jesus Christ, and shares her walk whenever possible. On today’s podcast, Kathie Lee gives us her insight about how she has learned to thrive, regardless of the circumstances she’s been given in life.

She puts God first in her life and lives by “It’s God’s faithfulness to me, not my faithfulness to God that matters.”

In our conversation, we talk about what you can do to prioritize your day, stay positive, laugh and enjoy every moment you have.  One of my favorite things is talking about her daily call with her mom!

Kathie Lee also has a new book coming out in March 2018. The Rock, The Road, And The Rabbi  preorders start September 21, 2017 and I can’t wait to get it!
