059: LIVE Thriving Beyond Belief Podcast Event with Cheryl Scruggs and her daughters Lauren Scruggs Kennedy & Brittany Scruggs Morgan

1024 684 Thriving Beyond Belief

I am extremely excited for this Thriving Beyond Belief episode because it is the taping of our Thriving Beyond Belief live podcast event from Oct 18th! It was such an amazing night and we are so thankful for everyone who was able to come out. For those who couldn’t make it, we wanted to bring the entire event to you in your living room, kitchen, car or wherever you listen to podcasts!

We had such a fun time the other night, and that was exactly what the night was for: to have fun and give some tidbits of wisdom about how to THRIVE in your life.

On this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking to the room about what THRIVING truly is. I break down my story and all that the Lord has taught me. We talk salvation, marriage, redemption, love, and healing. With five points spelling out Thrive, I use the word to speak on what is needed for a life that is chasing after Jesus and making him known in every area of your life.

Then I interviewed my two sweet daughters, Brittany Scruggs Morgan and Lauren Scruggs Kennedy, and then one of my dear friends, Brenda Bogart interviewed my daughters and me! We talked about so many things that I can’t count them all!

We experience so many different distractions and forces in our lives today, that we have to be disciplined and conscious of making the Lord a priority in our lives. We must take captive our lives and not let them get swept up in the current of this world. We must strive to daily make choices that lead us closer to the Lord.

I am so excited and humbled to be able to share this wonderful night with you, and I pray this episode brings you joy, insight, and a new perspective of Jesus. I can’t wait for you to hear! Enjoy!

Melissa Ice

058: Melissa Ice

1024 662 Thriving Beyond Belief

I am so thrilled to have Melissa Ice with me on Thriving Beyond Belief!

Melissa and her husband Jamey, along with their two baby girls, are taking Ft. Worth by storm! Melissa runs her own nonprofit called The Net that serves refugees, the homeless, and trafficking survivors in the Ft. Worth area. The Net even launched their own business recently. Her husband has a renovation company that she helps with, and they both run a restaurant called Brewed. So to say she has a lot going on is an understatement!

Melissa talks about this life simply being her chasing joy and doing what God has created her to do, which is loving God and loving our neighbors.

We discuss thriving and the importance of taking the pressure off of ourselves to have it all together, and instead truly value growth in our lives. We need to tap into community and fight for those spaces of learning.

Recognizing and combating fear, letting go of comparison, and embracing vulnerability are some of the things we discuss in this episode.

Melissa also discusses an article she wrote about all that she is learning about marriage. She talks about that she and her husband are each other’s biggest fans. She discusses that marriage is imperfect, but that there is value in vulnerability and honesty in marriage. Those things lead to growth and greater intimacy with your spouse. She even encourages that the important thing is when we need to jump start things in our marriage again, that there is freedom to do that. Rather than focusing on the drifting that happens in marriage, focus on getting back to being intentional with your spouse.

One of the most refreshing topics we cover is protecting our time. “No one is going to value your time more than you.” We can’t rely on others to know what is healthy for us, and we learn our capacities and boundaries for ourselves. We want to be good stewards of what the Lord has given us, but that doesn’t mean God is calling us to run ragged. He does not glorify busy. He values being intentional. We talk about the importance of adopting the sacredness of the sabbath as much as we adopt taking care of others in our lives. We need to trust the Lord with our margins.

We end with breaking some myths we establish about life as women, what motherhood is “supposed” to look like, and comparison.

This is one of those episodes that will make you feel at peace and give you comfort that you are not alone in the fight. Melissa encourages and is an advocate for women, so this is an episode you won’t want to miss.

057: Megan Michelson

1024 786 Thriving Beyond Belief

I am so thrilled to have Megan Michelson with me on Thriving Beyond Belief today!

Megan is involved in a ministry with Mary Flow Ridley called The Birds and the Bees. It began as a message geared towards parents having intentional conversations with their children about sexuality. It turned into a ministry that helps parents strategically talk with their children several times throughout childhood and adolescence about sex without a fearful approach.

I love that Megan discusses that having these conversations as loving authorities in our children’s lives is so important. The world is constantly shouting about these topics at children from a younger age, and rather than cowering away from it, parents should be the Godly truth resonating back.

We discuss finding the balance between seeing sex as something that is dirty and not discussed until marriage to the way the world works, which is that sexual intimacy is a consumerist activity. Mary goes into biblical truth that intimacy is a beautiful thing that God intentionally made, but is set with boundaries. We can find freedom in the boundaries, seeing that God is wanting the best for each of us, and that is why there are rules set in place for us.

Mary gives some practical tips to finding your voice about these conversations you want to have with your children, including some guidelines for ages for these talks. She also goes over how to handle hurdles that may come from being intentional about these discussions and some boundaries you can set with them.

Why Megan loves being a part of this ministry is because she feels passionately about equipping and empowering parents to help their children have a healthy understanding of sex. This is a continual part of our lives, and thus it needs to be an important topic in our homes. The Birds and the Bees ministry is set up to be something that helps these conversations not be so uncomfortable. These talks can no longer be taboo because the world is feeding children so many lies about sex. She also talks about the fact that these discussions will also help spouses communicate. Megan finally talks about that if sex is a hard topic because of your past or because your marriage is at a particular hard place, seek help. Reach out and see if there is someone who can professionally talk with you in a biblical way that will help mend this area of your life.

I absolutely loved having Megan on today, and hope you take away valuable insight from this episode. You won’t want to miss it!

056: Courtney Pray Duke

1024 683 Thriving Beyond Belief

I am so excited to have Courtney Pray Duke with me today on this episode of Thriving Beyond Belief!

Courtney has such an incredible story of God working through incredible tragedy to show His faithfulness. With three young children at home, Courtney received a call that forever changed the trajectory of her life. Finding out that her husband was in an accident, she rushed to the hospital, only to find out on the way that he didn’t make it.

From this story of incredible loss and hurt, Courtney talks about how God was revealed to her through this loss and helped her treasure each day. From pain He brings so much purpose. She remarks that in the economy of God, nothing is wasted.

She discusses walking through widowhood and who she now can share in the loss with. She talks about the journey of healing and how time brings hope. This loss gave Courtney a new lens on life and she talks about the fact that we have an eternity to live for. It’s remarkable how God uses unbelievable circumstances to show us how to full trust Him.

Courtney talks about what has helped her walk through this journey. Some helpful tools are being able to speak out loud about the circumstances. She also emphasizes her need for Scripture day to day.

We really focus on the change from surviving to thriving. Courtney can talk about knowing what it is like to thrive because she has walked through that journey of being in the place where she didn’t know how to put one foot in front of the other, wondering if she would make it to the next day. When she leaned into the Lord through Scripture and church community, she has slowly been able to see the bright days begin to appear again.

From the darkest of days with loss to now being remarried and having a new baby, Courtney’s story is one of constant redemption and God’s grace and love. She talks about the phase of being content with the Lord and His plans and then felt she was finally able to open her heart to love another in this life. We discuss the trust of the Lord in the valley so that we see His plans and goodness fulfilled on the mountain top.

We end discussing how the call on God’s life and the roles we play in our lives aren’t mutually exclusive.
We should begin embracing our complexities and many facets the Lord created us as so that we can confidently go forward in the Lord’s purpose for our life.

I believe this episode will touch so many lives. It will bring hope to those hurting and encouragement that God is there with us in every single season. I hope this episode comforts you today.

Lisa Bevere

055: Lisa Bevere

1024 641 Thriving Beyond Belief

I have Lisa Bevere with me today on Thriving Beyond Belief today, and I am so excited for this episode!

Lisa has been a long-time advocate for women, helping them to find freedom in their identity and purpose in the Lord. She is an author and just put out a new book, Adamant. We dive in to what Lisa discusses in her book today.

First, we talk about what thriving is to Lisa. Lisa explains that too many people in Christianity think that they just need to survive. Rather, Christianity is about serving the Lord in every area in our lives. And with that, we are living how God intended us to live, which leads to a thriving life.

When discussing Lisa’s newest book, Adamant, we focus on the topic of culture. The culture that is coming at us saying that everyone’s opinions are their truths. But she reminds us that God’s Word is THE truth, and that our stories are seen by God and are important, but to never replace that with truth. She defines how to live in Christ.

The world is so desperate to heal and find satisfaction through sinful means, which means the world is desperate for a Savior. Lisa discusses the danger of normalizing our behavior rather than imagining that God can discipline us in love to make us who He intended us to be. “Our truth should be like a rock, not a river.”

Any issues we have, whether it’s our marriage, our family, our work life, our friendships, stem from not having Jesus at the center. We even discuss the social media and how we are to take caution when being immersed with so many opinions around us that have no legitimate grounding. So we spend some time truly discussing our responsibility of being in the Word ourselves, daily, in order to decipher what truth really is.

Finally, Lisa and I talk about her marriage and family. We talk about how Lisa and her husband have learned over the years how to dream together. We talk about how to be good apologizers and repenters, and how your marriage is a daily model for your children. Our lives are walking testimonies to others, and so let us be advocates for our spouses.

May our lives be a testament to others that life with the Lord is one that is empowered, satisfying, and full of love. I hope you find some time today to listen to this amazing episode. You won’t want to miss it!
